Milton Mills, MD
Presentation: Plant-Powered Healing: Boosting Wellness & Equity
Dr. Milton R. Mills is a graduate of Stanford University School of Medicine and a practicing Critical Care and Internal Medicine physician in the Washington, DC metro area. Dr. Mills is the founder and president of the newly formed "Physicians for a Healthy America (P4HA) which is an organization of physicians of color and other healthcare workers and interested parties. P4HA’s goal and purpose is to promote the benefits of plant-based diets in communities of color, and also support research, social initiatives, and legislative policy aimed at improving the health profiles of African Americans and other marginalized communities. In the past, Dr. Mills volunteered as Associate Director of Preventive Medicine for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a North American group of doctors and laypersons dedicated to promoting improved health care, better and more appropriate nutrition, and higher standards in medical research.
Dr. Mills has lectured and given research seminars across the United States and in Mexico, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom on a variety of preventive health topics, including the negative impacts of meat and dairy consumption on human health. Dr. Mills’ compassionate and encompassing worldview has led him to apply his knowledge about preventative healthcare toward the unique challenges of those who are under-served by the mainstream medical model: minority and less affluent populations. As Associate Director of Preventative Medicine for PCRM, Dr. Mills co-authored landmark articles on the Racial Bias in Federal Nutrition Policy published in the Journal of the National Medical Association in 1999. A powerful public speaker and most importantly, an empathetic healthcare ally, Dr. Mills is a foremost advocate for a whole food, plant-based diet as providing the best nutrition, health, and athletic performance for all humans at every stage of life beyond infancy.

Daphne Bascom, MD, PhD
Presentation: Optimizing Healthspan: Movement, Mindset, and Hormonal Balance
Dr. Bascom is Chief Operations Office of The Vegan Gym, a vegan health coach, an IFBB Bikini pro, and has a lifelong passion for health and fitness. Dr. Bascom is a physician and has a Ph.D. in physiology. Her expertise in lifestyle medicine, fitness, and nutrition contributes to a powerful toolkit to help clients explore their WHY and achieve their health and fitness goals.
For the past several years, Dr. Bascom has focused on lifestyle and community health. She loves lifting weights, and leading bootcamps and has developed a passion for road and trail running. Dr. Bascom is a Certified Group Exercise Instructor, Certified Weight Management Specialist, and Certified Corporate Wellness Specialist. She believes in a holistic approach to health with a focus on nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, sleep, and community.
Dr. Bascom’s goal is to be your Wingman and to empower you to live your healthiest life.

Kendrick Farris
3-time Olympic & Hall of Fame Weightlifter.

Kendrick J. Farris is a husband, father, son, and brother, a Hall of Fame weightlifter, all time American record holder
And a three-time Olympic weightlifter with two top-10 Olympic finishes. He earned gold and silver medals in the Pan American Championships and broke the American total-lift record in 2016. Farris set the American total-lift record and competed in the 2016 Olympics games, after transitioning to a plant-based diet. Farris’s success as a plant-based athlete drew the attention of representatives from the James Cameron produced documentary The Game Changers. Farris joined a host of vegan athletes disproving the myth that athletes need meat for high performance. Farris developed and operates BlessTheGym, a sports performance brand, to teach young athletes the importance of physical activity and nutrition.
Born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana by way of Stoner Hill, Kendrick’s journey reflects resilience, purpose, and the power of discipline. Through sport, nutrition, and mentorship, he now focuses on helping others build strength from the inside out.

Robert Cosby, PhD
Presentation: Healthy Aging: Practical Strategies for Lifelong Wellness
Dr. Robert Cosby is Assistant Dean of Administration, an Associate Professor, and Director of the Howard University School of Social Work Multidisciplinary Gerontology Center. The Center serves in three areas: research, community service and training. Dr. Cosby is a gerontologist and a policy specialist. Currently, Dr. Cosby teaches Social Welfare Policy and Services; Community Organization; Human Services Administration; and Race, Class and Gender. He has interests in Social Isolation and Older Persons; Racism; HIV-AIDs, Spirituality and Health Care Disparities and Inequalities. He has worked in Health and Human Services at the local, State and Federal levels with over twenty years of experience in health, public health, Medicaid, and Long Term Care initiatives. Dr. Cosby is a graduate of Syracuse University.

Pamela Ferrell
Natural Haircare Pioneer; CEO, Co-founder Cornrows & Co.
Pamela L. Ferrell is an entrepreneur, pioneer, and advocate in the natural haircare field. She is the first known and documented African-American to help shape hair policies within the United States Armed Forces. Ferrell is CEO and co-owner of Cornrows & Co, a natural haircare salon in Washington, DC.
For the last 40 years, Ferrell has been an advocate for natural hair care, and an expert witness for hair braiding in legal cases. She developed the Circle Hair System which defined the different textures of hair. This system was used in the 2014 presentation to the U.S. Army and is now part of the Cornrows & Company collection in the National Museum of African-American History and Culture (NMAAHC). She has developed the Scalp MappingTM system to help identify the root cause of hair loss. Ferrell stated she created the system as a method to explain the different textures in human hair. She has been an active voice for natural hair care causes and a key contributor in efforts to get states to change outdated laws that impose unfair policies and fines on hair braiding salons.

Dr. Ruby Lathon is a certified holistic nutritionist and inspires with a powerful story of recovering from cancer through alternative treatment focused on a whole food, plant-based diet. Parking Details: On campus visitor parking is available at the Howard Center Lot for $10/day (credit card only). Metered street parking is also available nearby and is enforced Monday–Saturday, 8AM–6PM. The Shaw–Howard University Metro Station is a short 7-minute walk from the venue. Public buses are also available.
